A new oral medication, orforglipron, has shown superior performance against semaglutide tablets in a major Phase 3 clinical trial for managing type 2 diabetes and weight loss. GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone to curb appetite and improve insulin release. While semaglutide, the active ingredient in popular treatments like Ozempic and Wegovy, is effective, it is most efficient when injected.
Results from the international trial funded by Eli Lilly indicate orforglipron achieved greater improvements in blood sugar levels and a higher average weight loss of 6-8 percent, compared to 4-5 percent with semaglutide tablets. Researchers noted orforglipron represents a significant advancement in oral treatment options. The drug also offers convenience, as it does not require administration on an empty stomach. However, the trial did observe higher rates of gastrointestinal side effects and discontinuations due to adverse events with orforglipron compared to oral semaglutide. Regulatory approval will be sought for general availability, with ongoing evaluation for cardiovascular health benefits.
