Novo Nordisk announced Tuesday it will cut the price of its blockbuster GLP-1 drug Ozempic for certain Canadians, directly responding to the arrival of cheaper generic alternatives.

The move comes as generic versions of Ozempic and Wegovy begin hitting Canadian pharmacy shelves. Health Canada recently approved generic semaglutide from Dr. Reddy's and Apotex, offering patients a significantly lower-cost option for diabetes and weight management.

Starting Friday, eligible Canadians without public or private insurance can use a Novo Nordisk Savings Card to access the reduced price at local pharmacies, excluding Quebec. The card will be applied automatically at Novo Nordisk Care Rx operated by Rexall.

“We are dedicated to ensuring that eligible patients who choose Ozempic can stay on the brand because of these additional savings,” said Iain Graham, general manager at Novo Nordisk Canada.

Apotex says its generic semaglutide will cost about one-third less than the brand-name drug. Dr. Reddy’s product is already arriving at select pharmacies, with wider availability expected in the coming days.
