A recent analysis of over 400,000 Reddit posts has identified potential, less-reported side effects associated with GLP-1 receptor agonists. These medications, including semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy) and tirzepatide (Mounjaro, Zepbound), are widely used for weight loss and diabetes management.
While clinical trials typically focus on gastrointestinal issues like nausea and constipation, the University of Pennsylvania study, utilizing artificial intelligence, examined real-world user experiences shared on Reddit. Researchers found that nearly half of users reported side effects, including common issues as well as less-documented ones such as menstrual irregularities, temperature sensitivity, fatigue, anxiety, depression, insomnia, abdominal pain, acid reflux, headache, and dizziness.
Experts suggest some symptoms like fatigue and disorientation could stem from dehydration or low blood sugar, emphasizing the importance of proper medical supervision, nutrition, and hydration when taking these medications. They also caution that online data is a signal, not definitive proof, and further research is needed to confirm causality, as user-reported data can be skewed and lack crucial details like dosage and duration.
Physicians advise patients to discuss any unexpected symptoms with their doctors, even if they are unsure if the medication is the cause. Complications are rare when patients adhere to prescribed protocols and receive appropriate medical care.
