Prairie Harm Reduction has fired executive director Kayla DeMong following the discovery of a significant operating deficit. The Saskatoon-based safe consumption site cited a nearly 300% surge in service demand over the past year, which outpaced revenue and exposed inadequate financial management.
The organization’s board, alerted on March 5, stated that while no fraud or misuse of funds is suspected, overspending to meet urgent community needs led to a critical cash shortfall. External financial experts are now reviewing PHR’s books and advising on sustainability measures.
PHR emphasized it requires immediate community support to remain open. Just weeks earlier, it reported tripling overdose interventions in 2025 versus 2024, performing over 150 life-saving responses.
