Scientists have discovered that a molecule from pig semen could revolutionize treatment for retinoblastoma, a rare childhood eye cancer.
This innovative method uses exosomes-tiny cellular packets-from pig semen to deliver drugs through the eye's natural barriers. Unlike traditional injections, this approach avoids damaging delicate eye tissues.
In tests on mice, researchers applied eye drops containing these exosomes and successfully targeted tumor cells in the back of the eye. After 30 days, tumors were reduced to just 2-3% of their original size.
The technique could eventually treat other eye conditions like macular degeneration. Experts call it a "transformative" advancement, though further clinical trials are needed.
Researchers at Shenyang Pharmaceutical University in China published their findings in Science Advances.
