Cases of meningococcal disease in Kent have risen to 20, the UK Health Security Agency confirmed. Nine cases are laboratory-confirmed; 11 remain under investigation. Six confirmed cases are Group B meningococcal disease.
All affected individuals are young adults. One patient was treated in London but had no community contacts there. A separate infant case of Group B infection is under investigation but not currently linked to the outbreak.
UKHSA has distributed 2,500 antibiotic doses to students, close contacts, and attendees of Club Chemistry nightclub in Canterbury between March 5-7. General practitioners are now advised to prescribe antibiotics to those individuals and University of Kent students.
As an added precaution, UKHSA and the NHS have launched a targeted MenB vaccination program-starting with up to 5,000 students living in Canterbury Campus Halls of Residence. The rollout may expand based on ongoing risk assessment.
No national NHS incident has been declared. Officials urge anyone with meningitis symptoms to seek immediate care through a GP or NHS 111.
