US researchers have significantly advanced the understanding of the pathophysiology behind reproductive mood disorders in women. The findings, presented at the 2026 International Society of Gynecological Endocrinology Congress, shed new light on conditions like Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) and perimenopausal depression.

A study analyzed lymphoblastoid cell lines from women diagnosed with PMDD and perimenopausal depression, alongside a control group. Researchers manipulated hormone levels in vitro and analyzed gene expression, hormone measures, and behavioral ratings. This work challenges historical views that solely attribute these disorders to hormonal imbalances, suggesting a more complex underlying pathophysiology.

The research expands the understanding of how reproductive steroids influence affective disorders and offers potential new strategies for treatment.
