A major multicenter study confirms tocilizumab stabilizes lung function and improves multiple disease markers in patients with systemic sclerosis. The findings strengthen the case for the interleukin-6 inhibitor as a disease-modifying treatment for this complex autoimmune condition.

Researchers analyzed 197 patients across 15 referral centers in France and Italy over two years. Prior to treatment, participants experienced significant declines in forced vital capacity. After initiating tocilizumab, lung function stabilized and the rate of disease progression dropped from 43% to 24%.

Patients with diffuse cutaneous disease showed significant improvements in skin scores at both 12 and 24 months. Digital ulcers, arthritis activity, and cardiac biomarkers also improved during the observation period. Elevated C-reactive protein levels emerged as a key predictor of positive therapeutic response.

Infections affected approximately 23% of patients, while pulmonary arterial hypertension predicted treatment failure. Researchers conclude that tocilizumab delivers consistent benefits across multiple domains and suggest combining it with immunosuppressive drugs warrants further investigation.
