Saskatoon has issued a public health alert due to a significant spike in drug overdose incidents. The city's fire department responded to over 150 overdose calls in just the first 12 days of April.

The exact drug involved and its composition remain unknown. The Saskatchewan Ministry of Health's alert, active until April 20, highlights a "higher risk of overdose" in the Saskatoon area. Many of the calls necessitated the use of naloxone, a critical tool for reversing opioid effects. However, the alert cautions that naloxone is ineffective against substances like benzodiazepines.

Some incidents involved multiple individuals experiencing adverse reactions. Authorities are urging residents to monitor their neighbors and to call 911 immediately if an overdose is suspected. The Good Samaritan Drug Overdose Act protects those who seek emergency assistance from charges related to drug possession. Naloxone kits are available; interested individuals can contact HealthLine 811 for distribution sites.
