Sebum drives acne pathogenesis. In a rapid review, dermatologist Zoe Draelos analyzes new 52-week data for clascoterone cream 1%-the first topical androgen receptor inhibitor approved for acne vulgaris.

The study used validated digital sebumetry to objectively quantify oil production-offering a more precise biomarker than lesion counts alone. Results showed progressive, sustained sebum reduction through one year-not plateauing after early weeks.

This long-term trend correlated with continued improvement in inflammatory lesion counts and patient-reported clarity, supporting earlier initiation and persistence of therapy.

WINLEVI cream 1% is FDA-approved for acne in patients aged 12 and older. It is not indicated for children under 12.

Adverse effects include localized skin irritation-redness, scaling, dryness, and itching-and rare adrenal insufficiency signals requiring clinical monitoring.
