SINGAPORE: Clinics across Singapore have reported a significant increase in haze-related cases over the past three months. Patients are experiencing respiratory issues, itchy eyes, and skin flare-ups. Doctors warn that prolonged exposure to hazy conditions can worsen existing health problems, especially for children and the elderly.
The haze is primarily caused by forest fires in neighboring countries like Malaysia, leading to a noticeable burnt smell in the air. Despite this, official air quality readings remain within the good to moderate range. However, doctors advise vulnerable groups to stay indoors and avoid outdoor activities.
One clinic in Yishun has seen a 10% rise in haze-related illnesses, with symptoms including runny noses, throat discomfort, coughs, and itchy eyes. Dr. Gerald Fung from Unihealth 24-Hr Clinic notes that pre-existing conditions like asthma and sinus issues may worsen. Dr. Daryl Peh from Salus Medical highlights that fine haze particles can enter the bloodstream, causing inflammation and increased blood pressure.
Public vigilance is crucial as Singapore continues to experience lingering haze due to dry weather conditions.
