Singapore marathoner Eugene Lim has died at the age of 45 after a battle with Stage 4 urothelial cancer. Lim, co-founder of the fundraising running crew The High Panthers, was diagnosed with the condition in 2024. He passed away on Friday, April 10th, just three days after marrying his wife, Sofie Chandra.

Despite his diagnosis, Lim remained an inspiration to the running community, continuing to train and participate in races. He served as a brand ambassador for Adidas Singapore, often sharing motivational messages about embracing life's challenges. "I take each day at a time, with the support of those around me, and keep striving forward in the best way that I can," he wrote last year.

Mr. Lim's cancer journey began in 2020 with occasional discolored urine, becoming more frequent by 2022. In June 2024, a trip to Johor revealed a large tumor in his left kidney, confirmed as Stage 4 urothelial cancer that had spread to his lungs and other areas.

Before his diagnosis, Lim was exceptionally fit. He noted how cancer presented a unique challenge due to its unpredictable nature and constant mental, emotional, and physical toll. Initially responding to antibody-drug conjugates, his cancer adapted, rendering the treatment ineffective. He subsequently underwent traditional chemotherapy while continuing to train four times a week.

Lim viewed his cancer as a part of his life, emphasizing that it did not define him. He shared his journey publicly to raise awareness about early-onset cancer and to empower others through early detection. His message to those facing adversity was clear: "It’s not the pile of shit that defines who we are, but how we navigate through it. The power is ours."

Tributes have poured in for Lim, highlighting his strength, mentorship, and contributions to the running community. Adidas Singapore hailed him as the "heart of our community," and The High Panthers expressed gratitude for his leadership. Charities also recognized his presence and energy.
