A new study reveals TikTok videos about sudden cardiac death vary widely in accuracy-and the most reliable content gets the least attention.
Researchers analyzed 83 top-performing TikTok videos on the topic, using established medical quality benchmarks like DISCERN, JAMA criteria, and the CRAAP test. Videos by healthcare professionals scored significantly higher on accuracy, clarity, and balanced risk-benefit discussions. Yet they attracted fewer views, likes, and shares.
Non-professional creators generated substantially more engagement-more reshares (p=0.0050), favorites (p=0.0495), and overall interaction (p=0.0014)-despite offering lower-quality information.
Sentiment analysis showed no major difference in emotional tone, though non-expert posts leaned more positive, suggesting presentation style-not accuracy-drives virality.
The authors urge collaboration between clinicians and digital creators, plus potential platform interventions, to boost visibility of evidence-based health content on TikTok.
