Vasectomies surge each March-coinciding with the NCAA’s March Madness tournament. Insurance claims data from 2007-2015 confirmed the trend, with one study citing a 30 percent first-week increase in 2016.

Doctors advise two to three days of rest post-procedure-ideal for couch-based tournament viewing. That practical alignment sparked the ‘Vas Madness’ label, first popularized in 2008 by Oregon Urology Institute’s ‘Snip City’ radio campaign.

A 2018 Urology study led by urologist Kevin Ostrowski validated the March uptick-but also found a second peak at year-end, tied to patients meeting annual insurance deductibles.

The phenomenon now reflects a self-fulfilling prophecy: media coverage, clinic promotions, and academic attention reinforce demand. As UT Health San Antonio’s Alexander Rozanski noted in 2023, March Madness gives men a socially acceptable reason to rest-and recover properly.
