A recent study published in Nature found that combining cold exposure and breathwork, known as the Wim Hof Method, may improve energy, mental clarity, and stress resilience.
The trial involved over 400 healthy adults who practiced either the Wim Hof Method or mindfulness meditation for a month. Participants in the Wim Hof group reported greater improvements in energy and stress handling, especially after daily practice.
The method includes three pillars: cold exposure, breathing, and mindset. Researchers noted that while meditation reduced stress early on, the Wim Hof Method showed gradual improvements over time.
Lead author Dr. Jemma King emphasized the potential of the method to help people manage stress and build mental resilience. "If you train yourself to step into the cold every morning, you kind of override that voice that says 'Don't do that,'" she said.
Experts caution that cold exposure may not be safe for everyone, particularly those with heart conditions. Beginners are advised to start with simple cold showers or breathing exercises under medical guidance.
Wim Hof, the method's creator, believes individuals can gain control over their health and strength through consistent practice.
