A new report from Monster paints a stark picture of the American workplace. According to their 2026 State of Workplace Mental Health Report, 59% of workers say their job negatively impacts their mental health at least monthly. Nearly half report burnout, and 70% say they feel pressure to appear “okay” at work even when they are struggling.

More than seven in ten workers admit to staying in a job they knew was toxic. The top drivers of stress include increased workload, poor management, and a lack of work-life balance. 39% of workers experience anxiety or panic, while 37% report trouble sleeping.

The report also highlights a culture of silence. 37% of employees feel they cannot speak openly about mental health without negative consequences, and 35% say they have faced repercussions for doing so. Furthermore, 44% do not believe leadership is held accountable for toxic behavior.

The survey was conducted by Pollfish on April 19, 2026, among 1,000 currently employed U.S. workers.
