PARIS, June 6 - Mirra Andreeva has officially joined tennis royalty. The 19-year-old Russian defeated surprise finalist Maja Chwalinska 6-3, 6-2 on Saturday to win the French Open, becoming the youngest women's champion at Roland Garros since Monica Seles in 1992.
Long hailed as one of the sport's brightest prospects, Andreeva delivered her first Grand Slam title with a commanding performance. She joins active major champions like Iga Swiatek, Aryna Sabalenka, and Coco Gauff in the elite winners' club.
Andreeva's power and poise proved too much for Chwalinska, whose Cinderella run from qualifying captivated the tournament. The 24-year-old Pole struggled to replicate the tactical brilliance that had carried her through nine straight victories.
Despite the loss, Chwalinska will rise to 21st in the world rankings and took home $1.61 million-roughly double her previous career earnings. Andreeva earned $3.22 million for the win.
In men's doubles, veterans Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos successfully defended their title, defeating Harri Heliovaara and Henry Patten 6-4, 6-2. The top seeds did not drop a set all tournament.
