PARIS (AP) - Russian teenager Mirra Andreeva stormed into her first Grand Slam final, dominating Ukraine's Marta Kostyuk 6-1, 6-3 in a politically charged semifinal at the French Open.
The eighth seed broke early and never relented, unleashing relentless depth and aggression on Court Philippe Chatrier. Andreeva will face compatriot Diana Shnaider or Polish qualifier Maja Chwalinska for the title.
As has become standard for Ukrainian players since Russia's 2022 invasion, Kostyuk declined the pre-match photo and post-match handshake.
Andreeva, 19, raced to a 4-0 lead in the opening set. Kostyuk showed brief resistance in the second, but Andreeva snuffed out the threat, serving out a dominant win.
“I'm still very nervous,” Andreeva admitted. “She hadn't lost on clay this season, so there was pressure. I'm happy I got revenge for the Madrid final and reached my first Grand Slam final.”
