CALGARY - Quarterback Vernon Adams Jr. delivered a historic performance Thursday night, throwing six touchdown passes and rushing for another to lead the Calgary Stampeders to a commanding 58-36 victory over the Toronto Argonauts at McMahon Stadium.
Adams completed 20 of 25 passes for 405 yards, tying a single-game franchise record for touchdown passes. He has yet to throw an interception this season.
The Stampeders’ 58 points were the franchise’s most since September 2022. Calgary claimed a second straight Stampede Bowl, a tradition launched last year ahead of the Calgary Stampede.
Jalen Philpot and Dejon Brissett each caught two touchdown passes, while Tevin Jones and Clark Barnes added one apiece. Jones scored on a 73-yard catch and dash late in an explosive second quarter where the teams combined for 25 points in the final two minutes.
Defensive back Zy Alexander was a catalyst for Calgary, intercepting Argonauts quarterback Chad Kelly twice. Both turnovers were converted into touchdowns.
For Toronto, Kelly threw for 294 yards and three touchdowns before being replaced by Nick Arbuckle late in the fourth quarter. Makai Polk led the Argos receivers with two touchdown catches.
The Argonauts continue a season-opening seven-game road trip in Winnipeg next Friday. The Stampeders travel to Montreal on Saturday.
