Tereza Vobornikova of the Czech Republic achieved a career-first individual podium result, securing Olympic bronze in the women's mass start. This marks a significant boost for her team in the final biathlon race of the Milano Cortina Games.
Vobornikova's bronze was the only medal for her nation in biathlon, breaking a pattern where medals were dominated by traditional powerhouses like Norway, France, Sweden, Germany, and Italy. She became the eighth nation to reach the biathlon podium with a determined final lap.
"I cried a lot, but it was, it was happy tears," said the 25-year-old. "It's just amazing, what happened to me today, and I can't be more happy right now."
Despite challenging weather and immense pressure, Vobornikova emerged from the final shoot in the lead. Although eventually overtaken by France's Oceane Michelon (gold) and Julia Simon (silver), she expressed immense satisfaction with her performance.
"I tried to fight like hell in the last lap, and I am happy that it was enough for the bronze medal," she stated. "This bronze medal means everything to me, and it definitely tastes like gold."
