Carlos Alcaraz stated that the chance to quickly regain the world number one ranking from Jannik Sinner provides extra motivation for the Barcelona Open. However, steady improvement throughout the clay season remains his primary objective.
Alcaraz lost his Monte Carlo title and the top rank to Sinner. He can reclaim the No. 1 spot by winning the Barcelona trophy. Sinner is absent from the tournament, having taken a break after recent victories.
"I saw that I have to win the tournament here if I want to get the number one ranking back. The battle between Jannik and myself is great. It probably provides extra motivation," Alcaraz said. "But we're focused and my mind is set on trying to stay on the path we're on, trying to keep improving."
Alcaraz will remain world number two if he does not win the title in Barcelona. He plans to compete in Madrid and Rome before defending his French Open title starting May 24.
Reflecting on his loss to Sinner, Alcaraz believes their growing rivalry will ultimately make him a better player. "Jannik is one of those players who makes me better. He makes me realise my weaknesses, what I really need to focus on," he added.
