Dusty May is leaving Michigan after guiding the Wolverines to the 2026 national championship to become the new head coach of the Dallas Mavericks.

May, 49, told Fox News Digital the alignment with the front office and the chance to work with young superstar Cooper Flagg and legendary point guard Kyrie Irving were key draws.

May went 64-13 in two seasons at Michigan and 124-26 over his final four college seasons, including a surprise Final Four run at Florida Atlantic in 2023. His sudden jump to the NBA comes after the Mavericks fired Jason Kidd following a 26-56 campaign.

Dallas holds the 9th and 30th picks in the 2026 NBA Draft. At Michigan, players like Final Four MOP Elliot Cadeau and Trey McKenney now face uncertainty as the school begins an unexpected coaching search.
