Formula 1 returned to Shanghai for the 2026 Chinese Grand Prix, delivering high-speed drama and a record-breaking crowd. The revamped sprint format highlighted Mercedes’ dominance, while Ferrari and McLaren faltered with multiple retirements.

Teen sensation Andrea Kimi Antonelli claimed his first career victory, becoming the second-youngest winner in F1 history. After a poor sprint start, he nailed the Grand Prix launch, holding off teammate George Russell despite late pressure. Seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton surged early, briefly passing both Mercedes cars, before finishing third.

Hamilton praised the intense battle with Charles Leclerc, calling it one of his most enjoyable races in years. The Ferraris showed strong starts and corner speed but lacked straight-line pace compared to Mercedes’ superior hybrid powertrain.

Four cars failed to start, including both McLarens and Williams’ Alex Albon. Max Verstappen retired from sixth due to cooling failure, amplifying Red Bull’s struggles. Both Aston Martins also retired, deepening concerns over reliability.

The Shanghai crowd was the largest seen at the circuit, with newly expanded grandstands fully occupied. Hamilton noted fans filled sections long dormant, signaling F1’s growing footprint in China.

No upgrades are expected until Miami, after Middle East conflicts led to cancellations of the Bahrain and Saudi Arabian Grands Prix. Teams now have April to develop their cars ahead of the next race in Japan.
