The FIA has reduced the maximum energy allowance for Formula One hybrid power units during qualifying at the Japanese Grand Prix, cutting it from 9 to 8 megajoules. The change, unanimously approved by power unit manufacturers, aims to restore driver dominance in qualifying by reducing reliance on energy management.

Drivers had been forced into tactical 'lift and coast' maneuvers to conserve battery power, diluting the high-speed intensity traditionally associated with grid-deciding sessions.

"This adjustment reflects feedback from drivers and teams, who have emphasised the importance of maintaining qualifying as a performance challenge," the FIA stated.

The shift comes amid broader rule changes this season that split power output nearly evenly between electric and combustion sources, sparking both excitement on track and criticism over diminished qualifying spectacle.

Further rule reviews are scheduled in the coming weeks.
