SYDNEY, March 22 - Japan secured its third Women’s Asian Cup title in four tournaments with a 1-0 victory over Australia, surviving sustained pressure in the second half to lift the trophy at Stadium Australia.
The Nadeshiko took an early lead through Maika Hamano’s well-placed strike, but spent much of the final defending as Australia pushed for an equalizer.
A record crowd of 74,357 watched in disappointment as Japan held firm, showcasing resilience despite failing to dominate possession or rhythm.
Head coach Nils Nielsen praised his team’s character.
"We couldn't find our own rhythm, but the character of the players makes us 10-20 per cent better," said the Danish tactician.
Nielsen spotlighted 21-year-old Hamano as a rising global star, drawing parallels to her Chelsea clubmate Sam Kerr.
"Make sure you know her name," he said. "She's on the way towards the stars."
Australia’s coach Joe Montemurro acknowledged his side’s lack of finishing precision but hailed the squad’s progress ahead of next year’s World Cup in Brazil.
"I've got 26 warriors," Montemurro said. "This has been an excellent journey."
The result reaffirms Japan’s status as Asia’s premier women’s football power.
