Australian soccer icon Sam Kerr is back in the National Women's Soccer League. The 32-year-old striker has signed with Gotham FC, marking her return to North America after winning five Women's Super League titles with Chelsea in London.
Kerr holds the NWSL's all-time scoring record and is a two-time league MVP. She previously played for the franchise from 2015 to 2017, when it was known as Sky Blue FC.
"I come back with a lot of experience and a lot of trophies under my belt," Kerr told reporters.
The 2023 Ballon d'Or runner-up cited Gotham's recent championship success and the competitive parity of the NWSL as key factors in her decision. She described the American league as more physically demanding and open compared to the dominance Chelsea enjoyed in England.
Kerr also has personal ties to the U.S. Her partner, Kristie Mewis, is an American player, and her new contract through 2030 provides the stability she sought. She expressed a desire to put down roots after frequently changing teams early in her career.
