LeBron James is preparing to return for a record 24th NBA season, with contract negotiations between his representatives and the Los Angeles Lakers already underway.
ESPN’s Brian Windhorst confirmed the discussions on ESPN Cleveland radio. “Right now, he’s allowed to negotiate with the Lakers, and I believe they are negotiating. I believe they’re going back and forth,” Windhorst said. He indicated a deal could be finalized within the next two weeks.
James has spent the last eight seasons with the franchise. His immediate focus on a Lakers deal effectively quiets speculation about another free-agency move. The decision comes after Los Angeles was eliminated by the Oklahoma City Thunder in the Western Conference semifinals last month. James largely carried the team to a first-round victory over the Houston Rockets while playing without injured stars Austin Reaves and Luka Doncic.
At his home in Los Angeles, the veteran forward remains central to team operations.
