Paris, June 3 - Poland's Maja Chwalinska has become just the second qualifier in the Open era to reach the French Open semifinals. Ranked 113th, the 24-year-old defeated Russia's Anna Kalinskaya 7-6(3), 6-3 on Wednesday.
Chwalinska took a mental health break in 2021 after battling depression. "I just couldn't get out of bed anymore," she said. "I honestly didn't know if I'm gonna come back."
Once a junior doubles partner with Iga Swiatek, Chwalinska has now surpassed her compatriot's run at this year's tournament. She faces Diana Shnaider next.
Chwalinska avoids social media to stay grounded. "I post, and then I quit," she noted.
