Teenage sprinter Gout Gout is set to challenge the 10-second barrier in the 100 meters at the Australian junior championships in Brisbane. This follows his record-breaking 200-meter win last weekend.

At just 18, Gout achieved a global spotlight with an under-20 world record of 19.67 seconds in the 200m at the senior championships in Sydney. His immediate focus now shifts to Saturday's semi-finals and finals at the Queensland Sport and Athletics Centre, where he aims to break the 10-second mark after running 10.19 in the heats. Only two Australians have previously achieved this: Patrick Johnson (9.93) and Lachlan Kennedy (9.96).

Gout, who recorded a personal best of 10 seconds flat in February at the same venue, expressed confidence, stating, "100 percent. Hopefully the wind stays pretty calm and anything is possible."

National record holder Patrick Johnson, while ready for his record to be challenged, advised against excessive pressure, noting, "My records are there to be broken, you create your own history and your own reality."

Gout will also compete in the 200m preliminaries on Sunday. Despite comparisons to Usain Bolt, some in the athletics community remain cautious. Former champion Justin Gatlin suggested Gout needs to prove his speed outside of Australia, stating, "You can run fast in comfort... But can you run fast in discomfort? That's where it's at."

Gout remains unfazed by criticism, viewing it as motivation: "If there's haters, it means you are doing something right. It motivates me to do an even bigger race and run even faster."
