Legendary golfer Tom Watson has sharply criticized the PGA Tour's new program that facilitated Brooks Koepka's return. Koepka, who left LIV Golf in December 2025, was approved for PGA Tour reinstatement under the new Returning Member Program.
Watson, an honorary Masters starter, stated the Tour reneged on its initial promise that players leaving for LIV would be banned for life. He believes any player returning from LIV should have to play the Korn Ferry Tour for a year to re-qualify.
Koepka expressed excitement about returning, citing a desire to be closer to family and belief in the PGA Tour's new direction, including an equity program. He accepted financial penalties, reportedly up to $85 million, and committed to charity donations.

Watson argued that players who left for LIV violated the principle of protecting sponsors and that their return was a "nonstarter." He noted that sponsors rely on player commitments, and conflicting event rules were crucial.
Watson, a two-time Masters champion, joined the PGA Tour in 1971 and won eight major championships.
