Red Bull Racing team boss Laurent Mekies has dismissed suggestions that Max Verstappen could lose interest in Formula 1 due to the sport's upcoming engine era. Mekies stated there is "zero concern" about the four-time world champion's commitment.
Verstappen has previously expressed reservations about the new 2026 car regulations, describing the current models as "Formula E on steroids" and indicating he did not want to test the 2026 car on the simulator last year due to his strong dislike of the feel.
"The challenge of these regulations is massive... but that's also what we love to try to break through these challenges," Mekies commented, emphasizing the team's intent to innovate and find solutions.
Verstappen, speaking separately, maintained he was simply being honest about his concerns, particularly regarding the increased electrical component in the new engines. He stated his desire for Formula 1 to remain distinct from all-electric series like Formula E, advocating for a focus on a powerful engine over a larger battery.
The new Formula 1 season is set to commence on March 8 in Australia.
