The fifth Street Child World Cup wrapped up Thursday in Texcoco, Mexico, bringing together street-connected youth from 28 teams across more than 20 countries for a tournament combining football and advocacy.
U2's Larry Mullen Jr. flipped the coin for the boys' Shield final, while Bono, the Edge, and Adam Clayton watched from the sidelines. Bono urged the crowd to focus on the young players.
Brazil's boys defeated India in the Cup final, sparking jubilant celebrations. Mexico's girls won the girls' Cup division against Kenya. Indonesia's boys and Brazil's girls topped the Shield divisions.
"It's about creating a global platform for young people's voices to be heard," said John Wroe, CEO and co-founder of Street Child United. "On their demands on identity, access to education, protection from violence and gender equality."
The tournament concluded with a performance by American rapper Paul Russell. Brazil captain Joao JV, 18, described the victory as a dream come true, while India girls captain Pavithra Vellaiyangiri, 17, highlighted the chance to connect with players from other countries.
