The Hamilton Tiger-Cats spoiled the Winnipeg Blue Bombers home opener Thursday night, securing a decisive 37-27 victory before a sellout crowd at Princess Auto Stadium. This win marks the first time since 2019 that Hamilton has avoided starting the season with back-to-back losses.

Quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell orchestrated the upset against his former team, throwing for 287 yards and three touchdowns. The Tiger-Cats capitalized on defensive lapses, building an 18-point lead by halftime. Larry Rountree added 124 rushing yards and Keric Wheatfall contributed 102 receiving yards for Hamilton.

Winnipeg head coach Mike O’Shea cited poor tackling as the primary factor in the defeat. Despite quarterback Zach Collaros passing for 421 yards and two touchdowns, the Bombers surrendered 455 net offensive yards. Receiver Tommy Nield recorded a career-high 111 receiving yards, but late touchdowns from Ontaria Wilson and Bryce Perkins were insufficient to overcome the deficit.

Collaros acknowledged that turnovers and missed opportunities proved costly. Running back Brady Oliveira was limited to just 32 rushing yards as Winnipeg fell behind early, forcing the offense into a pass-heavy approach. The loss drops the Bombers to 1-1 on the season.

On a positive note for Hamilton, defensive back Jamal Peters was cleared and released from the hospital after suffering a knee to the head in the first quarter. Winnipeg now enters a bye week before hosting the Edmonton Elks on June 25.
