Venus Williams is targeting a spot in this year's French Open, following her return to clay court competition at the Madrid Open. The seven-time Grand Slam champion lost her opening match 6-2, 6-4 to Kaitlin Quevedo, marking her tenth consecutive singles defeat after a lengthy break.

Williams, 45, expressed optimism about her clay court performance, stating, "I felt like in the last game I started to move better on the clay." She acknowledged the need for adjustments after not competing on clay for several years.

Unable to compete in Rome due to prior commitments, Williams expressed disappointment but remains focused on her clay season. The French Open commences on May 24, and Williams will require a wild card to participate.
