Chicago White Sox longtime anthem performer Gerald Chaney was hospitalized Wednesday night after collapsing during his pregame performance. The incident occurred as Chaney was singing "Lift Every Voice and Sing" amidst "Jackie Robinson Day" festivities.
Chaney, who was also scheduled to perform "The Star-Spangled Banner," paused mid-song before collapsing. Medical personnel attended to him at the ballpark before he was transported to a local hospital for evaluation.
The White Sox organization issued a statement confirming Chaney's medical emergency and expressing well wishes for his recovery. The game was delayed by 12 minutes. White Sox manager Will Venable expressed relief that Chaney was in stable condition.
The Tampa Bay Rays went on to defeat the White Sox 8-3.
