The New York Yankees have optioned shortstop Anthony Volpe to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre after his rehab assignment ended. The decision comes as Jose Caballero, acquired last season, has seized the starting role with strong play.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone said, "Caballero is playing the heck out of the position and playing really well. That complicates it."

Caballero has started 34 games at shortstop this season, slashing .259/.306/.405 with four home runs and 12 RBIs. Volpe hit .250 in 13 rehab games after undergoing left shoulder surgery in October.

Volpe struggled through a shoulder injury last season, hitting .212 with 19 homers and 72 RBIs, but committed 19 errors, third-most among MLB shortstops. The Yankees' 2019 first-round pick debuted in 2023 and won a Gold Glove that year.

The Yankees own the best record in the American League after a 11-3 win over the Baltimore Orioles on Sunday.
