Alberta’s government is set to change existing laws to enable individuals to sue others for sharing fake intimate images created through artificial intelligence, known as deepfakes. Technology Minister Nate Glubish emphasized that such images can cause serious harm and that the new legislation will provide additional protection. The law will also cover audio recordings.

Kristine Cassie, CEO of the Chinook Sexual Assault Centre, supports the move, noting that Alberta has been behind other provinces in addressing deepfakes. She hopes the new law will have real impact.
The province aims to introduce the legislation this fall.
