Chinese automaker BYD is expanding its reach into the high-end automotive market, challenging established luxury brands like Porsche, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz. The company has developed new electric vehicle (EV) charging stations capable of reaching an 80% charge in a mere 12 minutes.
BYD's sales in the UK and Europe saw a significant surge last year, more than tripling to nearly 190,000 vehicles. Currently, BYD holds a 1.7 percent market share in the European Union and 2.4 percent in the UK.
The company plans to deploy hundreds of these "flash stations" across Europe this year, building on its existing network of over 4,200 sites in China. Globally, BYD aims to operate 20,000 charging stations by year-end.
This initiative mirrors Tesla's strategy with its Supercharger network, which significantly boosted brand appeal and customer retention. Tesla's stations can add up to 200 miles of range in 15 minutes.
Electric vehicle sales continue to climb, representing 17.4 percent of EU sales last year. While battery-powered models surpassed petrol vehicles in European sales for the first time in December, charging infrastructure remains a key challenge in some regions, contributing to range anxiety.
