South Korea's SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won says the global chip wafer shortage will likely persist until 2030 due to surging AI-driven demand.
Speaking at Nvidia's GTC Conference in San Jose, Chey cited a projected 20% wafer shortfall, requiring four to five years to resolve. SK Hynix, the leading supplier of high-bandwidth memory for AI chips, holds a 57% share of the HBM market and 32% in DRAM.
The company is developing a strategy to stabilize volatile DRAM prices, with details expected from its CEO soon.
Chey confirmed SK Hynix is reviewing a U.S. ADR listing to expand its global investor base and enhance international visibility. The move would broaden access beyond Korean markets.
Geopolitical tensions in the Middle East have driven up energy costs, prompting SK Group to accelerate its search for alternative energy sources.
Shares of SK Hynix rose 3.5% in Seoul trading, outpacing the broader KOSPI index.
