Google LLC is overhauling its search engine with artificial intelligence, announced today at the Google I/O developer conference. The company is upgrading the search experience to "reimagine it with AI," shifting from static results pages to an AI workspace.
The search box will now expand to accommodate longer, more complex queries, similar to AI Mode. Users can search across text, images, videos, and Chrome tabs. Below AI Overviews, a new follow-up box enables conversational back-and-forth without clicking a button.
Google is entering the "agentic era" with Search Agents that run 24/7, collecting information and returning reports. Users can customize agents with specific criteria-for example, an apartment-hunting agent that scours the web for new listings matching their requirements and reports back.
Beyond information retrieval, AI can now generate custom interfaces. Using the Antigravity tool and Gemini 3.5 Flash model, Search can build mini apps, such as an interactive solar system visualization or custom components like tables and graphs. Users can also request persistent tools, like a fitness and diet tracker that integrates local maps and real-time data.
This experience rolls out over the summer for Pro and Ultra subscribers.
