The Green Party of England and Wales has secured a significant victory in a pivotal UK by-election, establishing itself as a major political force. The Greens' Hannah Spencer won the Gorton and Denton seat with 14,980 votes, surpassing Nigel Farage's Reform UK, which garnered 10,578 votes. The governing Labour Party suffered a substantial defeat, with its candidate Angeliki Stogia securing only 9,364 votes.
This result, the highest turnout in a by-election since 1983, fuels claims that traditional parties are in irreversible decline. Spencer highlighted economic hardship and the need for fairness for working-class people, stating, "Everybody should get a nice life." She also condemned the scapegoating of the area's Muslim population.
The Green Party's surge follows the election of Zack Polanski as leader last September. Polanski advocates for policies such as withdrawing the UK from NATO, higher taxes on the wealthy, and nationalizing key services. His leadership has coincided with a rise in Green Party polls, overshadowing attempts by former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn to form a new left-wing movement.
Reform UK, despite leading in some national polls, faces challenges including candidate vetting failures and defections. Candidate Matt Goodwin, known for espousing far-right views on immigration and national identity, faced pressure from even more extreme figures within the right wing.
The Labour government, led by Prime Minister Keir Starmer, faces considerable pressure following this defeat and recent controversies, with further local and devolved government elections expected to be challenging.
