Police in Australia's Northern Territory have charged a man with murder and two counts of sexual assault following the death of a five-year-old girl.

The body of the girl, identified only as Kumanjayi Little Baby for cultural reasons, was discovered Thursday after a major police search. Jefferson Lewis, 47, was charged with her murder Saturday night and is scheduled to appear in Darwin court Tuesday.

Five people have been arrested over violent riots in Alice Springs sparked by the child's death. Northern Territory Police Commissioner Martin Dole called the riots "disgusting" and "abhorrent."

Violent protests erupted outside Alice Springs hospital where Lewis was being treated. Police used tear gas as protesters threw projectiles and attacked vehicles. Property damage and stolen items from local businesses are estimated at more than A$180,000.

Kumanjayi Little Baby disappeared last Saturday after being put to bed at an Aboriginal town camp near Alice Springs just before midnight.
