A potential meteor event surprised residents across British Columbia's South Coast Tuesday night, with brilliant flashes lighting up the sky and subsequent booms shaking homes.
Videos captured from Metro Vancouver and surrounding areas show two distinct flashes around 9:08 p.m., followed minutes later by audible booms reported from North Vancouver to the Fraser Valley and even into Washington state. One North Vancouver resident described a "tremendous bang" that caused their balcony door to shake.
The sonic booms were reportedly strong enough to be registered on seismographs, equipment typically used to detect earthquake activity. Experts are being consulted to confirm the cause of the observed phenomena.
