Okanagan pet owners are receiving urgent warnings regarding a spike in canine parvovirus cases following the diagnosis of a severely ill three-month-old puppy named Lucky.

Rescuers found Lucky wandering near Oliver, British Columbia, in critical condition. He was rushed to veterinary care, where he was diagnosed with parvovirus, a highly contagious and potentially fatal disease primarily targeting young dogs.

Dr. Harsh Joshi, a veterinarian treating the case, explains that the virus attacks the digestive system, causing severe dehydration as the body fails to absorb nutrients or water.

"The mortality rate can be 80 to 90 percent in unvaccinated dogs," Joshi stated. The virus spreads easily through contact with infected animals, contaminated surfaces, and public areas like dog parks.

While treatment costs can exceed $4,000 and do not guarantee survival, experts emphasize that routine vaccinations are highly effective and affordable prevention methods.

The Okanagan Humane Society remains hopeful for Lucky’s recovery but uses his case as a stark reminder: missing a single vaccination can be life-threatening for puppies.
