United Nations officials are issuing stark warnings as the brutal war in Sudan intensifies, nearing its third anniversary. Rosemary DiCarlo, Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs, highlighted that "no corner of Sudan is safe from the threat of attack," as fighting spreads and drone strikes become a defining feature of the conflict. The consequences for civilians are severe, with front lines fluctuating and cities like El Obeid under siege, raising fears of catastrophic ground combat.

The humanitarian crisis is deepening, with famine conditions potentially prevalent in key areas. Edem Wosornu, Director of the Crisis Response Division, reported an alarming escalation of drone attacks leading to civilian casualties and displacement, with over a million people now displaced in the Kordofan region alone. Food insecurity is rampant, and malnutrition rates are exceeding famine thresholds in parts of North Darfur. The toll on aid workers is also mounting, with numerous humanitarian personnel killed and injured while delivering essential aid. Violence against women and girls has reached catastrophic levels.
Concerns are growing over atrocities, with a UN human rights mechanism warning of "indicators of a genocidal path" following RSF actions in El Fasher. UN officials had repeatedly warned of the risk of mass atrocities, but these warnings were not heeded. High Commissioner Volker Türk has cautioned about similar crimes in Kordofan. The UN is urging stronger international resolve, calling for unified messaging and decisive action from the Security Council to pressure parties to end the war, ensure humanitarian access, and secure lasting peace.
