ENGELBERG, Switzerland - A cable car violently detached and plunged down a snowy mountainside Wednesday morning at the Engelberg-Titlis ski resort, killing one passenger.

Regional police confirmed the gondola on the Titlis Express line crashed shortly after departing Trubsee station. The individual was alone inside and suffered fatal injuries. Age and nationality were not released.

Witness videos captured the cabin tumbling down the slope. Authorities launched an investigation but have not confirmed the cause.

Swiss Met Office recorded wind gusts up to 93 km/h (58 mph) at the time. Resort officials note safety protocols trigger alerts at 40 km/h and mandate shutdowns at 60 km/h - though it’s unconfirmed if winds caused the failure.

Rescue helicopter crews responded immediately. No further details released.
