The US Commission of Fine Arts has unanimously approved a 24-karat gold coin bearing the image of President Donald J. Trump, intended to commemorate America’s 250th birthday on July 4, 2026.

The coin depicts Trump in a strongman pose, fists pressed against the Resolute desk, based on a photo by his White House photographer. The top reads “LIBERTY,” with the dates 1776-2026 beneath.

Federal law prohibits living presidents from appearing on U.S. currency. A bipartisan panel previously rejected the concept, and a proposed bill, the Trump (The Restrict Ugly Money Portraits) Act, aims to ban such imagery. The bill remains unpassed.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is expected to authorize minting once final dimensions are set. Acting Mint chief Megan Sullivan confirmed the Treasury has authority to issue certain coins.

US Treasurer Brandon Beach praised the move, calling Trump’s profile "the most emblematic" for the nation’s milestone. Critics argue the decision reflects political overreach amid ongoing national tensions.

The coin will be part of a very limited production run, though the exact number remains undisclosed.
