Voters in Greater Manchester’s Makerfield constituency are casting ballots today in a critical by-election that may reshape British leadership. Polls remain open until 10 p.m., with results expected overnight.

The contest was triggered when former MP Josh Simons resigned to allow Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham to challenge Prime Minister Keir Starmer. This move follows Labour’s poor performance in May local elections, which intensified pressure on Starmer and sparked internal calls for new leadership.

Burnham is viewed by many Labour lawmakers as the party’s best path to recovery. However, he faces significant opposition from right-wing factions. Nigel Farage’s Reform UK and Rupert Lowe’s Restore Britain party are campaigning heavily on immigration enforcement, framing the vote as a choice between border control and Burnham’s policies.

Burnham’s position on Brexit remains a focal point. While he previously advocated for rejoining the European Union, he has since distanced himself from those remarks. He now maintains that while Brexit caused economic damage, reopening those debates is not currently viable for national stability.
