American medical missionary Dr. Peter Stafford has tested positive for Ebola in the Democratic Republic of Congo. He is being evacuated to Germany for treatment after developing symptoms over the weekend.
CDC officials confirmed at least six other Americans exposed to the virus are also being evacuated. Stafford’s wife, also exposed, remains asymptomatic and under quarantine.
The outbreak in eastern DR Congo has caused at least 100 deaths, with over 390 suspected cases. The CDC says the risk to the American public remains low.
The CDC has invoked Title 42 to block foreign travelers who visited DR Congo, Uganda, or South Sudan in the past 21 days.
The World Health Organization has declared the outbreak an international emergency. The current strain, Bundibugyo virus, has no approved vaccines or treatments.
