The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has issued a Level 1 alert for dengue fever in 16 countries, including the Maldives and Cook Islands.
Dengue is spread by infected mosquitoes and causes severe aches, nausea, vomiting, and rashes. Symptoms appear within two weeks of a bite and typically last up to seven days. Severe cases may involve bleeding or death - affecting 1 in 20 patients.
No cure exists. Treatment includes rest, acetaminophen, hydration, and medical evaluation. A vaccine is approved only for U.S. children aged 9-16 with prior infection living in endemic zones.
Travelers should use DEET-based repellent, wear long sleeves at dusk, eliminate standing water, and install window screens. Returning travelers must avoid mosquito bites for three weeks post-trip.
